Walker was born in Wrightsville, Georgia to Willis and Christine Walker. He was raised as one of the 7 children in a blue collar family.  Walker said that as a child he was overweight and had a speech impediment. Walker’s mother taught him not to use these problems as excuses in life.
In high school Walker was a football standout, he  played for the Johnson County High School Trojans in Wrightsville, Georgia from 1975–1979. In 1979, he rushed for 3,167 yards, helping the Trojans to their first
Herschel played running back for the University of Georgia, where he was a 3-time All-American and winner of the 1982 Heisman Trophy and Maxwell Award. He is the only player in NCAA history to finish in the top 3 in Heisman voting every season he played football, winning it his junior year. He is also the only player in the NCAA to be in the top 10 in rushing yards and have only played 3 years. During his freshman season in 1980, Walker set the NCAA freshman rushing record and finished third in the Heisman Trophy voting. Also, Walker was the first true freshmen to become a first-team All-American. He also would play a major role in helping Georgia go undefeated and win a nation title during the 1980 season, his freshman year. He has been named by ESPNU as the greatest college running back of all time.

Walker left Georgia a year early electing to play football in the USFL, a start-up league  who would take players after there junior year, at the time the NFL would not. He would sign with the Ney Jersey generals where he would play 3 seasons winning the league rushing title in two of those years. He holds the professional football record for single-season rushing yards with 2,411 yards in 1985.

Herschel Walker

Walker was drafted in 1985 by the Dallas Cowboys who suspected the USFL would fold, which it did. Herschel would have his best NFL years in his first stint with the cowboys, most notably rushing for 1514 yards in 1988. He would then go on to play in Minnesota, Philadelphia, New York Giants, and finished his NFL career back in Dallas. His combined rushing numbers for the USFL and the NFL (13,787 yards) would place him 5th All-Time on the NFL’s career rushing list. He is the only player to gain 4,000 yards three different ways: rushing, receiving and kickoff returns.

If you think Herschel Walker is some kind of weight room warrior you would be wrong, Herschel has never been into weightlifting, all of his exercises are body weight exercises. He started doing sit-ups and push-ups as a kid, as many as 5000 a day and still to this day he does 750-1500 pushups every day as well as 3000 sit ups. He also mixes in 1,500 pull-ups, 1000 dips, and 1000 squats every day. For cardio he will run up to 8 miles and do sprints as well. He also does a regimen of martial arts and MMA after he has completed this workout every morning.

In 2009 Herschel signed with MMA promotion Strikeforce to compete in the heavyweight division. He began a 12-week training camp with trainer “Crazy” Bob Cook at the American Kickboxing Academy in October 2009. He made his MMA debut on January 30, 2010, Walker defeated Greg Nagy via TKO. Walker then signed to fight Scott Carson. They fought on January 29, 2011, and Walker defeated Carson via TKO (strikes) at 3:13 of round 1. Following his second victory, Walker looks to continue his MMA careeost of my life I have been extremely interested in what we can do to make ourselves as healthy as possible. We cannot change our genetics, but I figure there is a great deal that is within our control that can have an impact on whether we live a life filled with health and vitality, or whether we suffer with pain and disease.

I was the top graduating student at the University of Toronto in Physical and Health Education in 1992, where I studied anatomy, physiology, exercise physiology, nutrition and how exercise can improve health. I was the fitness director of a Toronto health club, before starting my own personal training business.

Then I moved to Vancouver, B.C., and started my personal training business again. I became frustrated by my inability to help my clients with all of their various aches and pains, and pursued further education through the CHEK Institute in San Diego. I learned an incredible amount, and became far more effective with my clients suffering from low back pain, but still found many clients that did not respond as I felt they should. I took more courses, learning more and more about physical rehabilitation. My skills improved. But even so, some of my clients were not responding and I didn't understand why.

Because there is nothing I love more than learning about the human body, I decided to take my CHEK Level 3 course, where Paul Chek made it obvious to me that there is a lot more to orthopeadic problems than simply looking at the physical. It is not my responsibility to "heal" my clients - I am the coach, and they will heal themselves if they are ready.

I began to read and read and read. I began to have a much better appreciation of how nutrition and other lifestyle factors can have a huge impact on healing or the lack of healing. What we eat today turns into our cells tomorrow, so it is vital that the raw material is of good quality, and something that the body recognizes as food.

I went back to the CHEK Institute, and took the Nutrition and Lifestyle Consultation course, and that course solidified what I had been learning. Disease is a function of bodily systems being out of balance, and when we do what is necessary to bring the body back into balance our health is restored. This can be done by thinking right, breathing right, eating healthy food, drinking healthy water, sleeping enough and at the right time, exercising regularly, and avoiding the toxins that make us unhealthy, such as pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, preservatives, colourings, flavourings, etc. that are in our food, the drugs which our livers must detoxify, and the chemicals in our environment.

My hope is that through this site and the free weekly e-zine, you can travel the wellness journey with me, and prevent illness, or if you are ill, you can learn some ways to become well again. Mostly, wellness is about choices - make poor choices and over time the result is illness. Make good choices, and over time the result is vibrant health. Often good choices don't take any more time than poor choices - it is simply knowing what to choose.

You might be asking yourself why in the world you should trust my suggestions. Very good question. Don't. Don't believe a word I say. I will provide resources - look it up yourself. I am studying health and wellness and truly believe what I suggest to be accurate. As Paul Chek says, does it make sense to study someone that is sick in order to learn how to be healthy? No. One actually needs to study those that are healthy. I do not think it is reasonable to believe food studies that are put out by food companies, nor drug studies that are put out by drug companies. I feel more comfortable believing the experts that study fats for example, and are not funded by people that can profit by the research. You might be surprised at how different the world looks through those eyes.

The other component that is inextricably linked to our health and wellness is the health and wellness of our planet. As the lakes, rivers, oceans become polluted, the forests get chopped down, the air becomes difficult to breathe, and the soil becomes sterile, we will have a harder and harder time recovering our health. As individuals, we need to speak with our dollars and support environmentally friendly ways of doing things so that we can preserve our planet and all life.

Your health is your responsibility, and there is so much you can do to improve your vitality. The goal of this site is to help you on your wellness journey. Enjoy it! AM NOT BLESSED WITH A SMALL FRAME OR HIGH METABOLISM, STAYING FIT AND HEALTHY IS A DAILY PROCESS FOR ME AND BY GOD'S GRACE I HAVE FOUND A WAY TO BALANCE MY EXERCISE AND NUTRITION TO MAINTAIN MY WELLNESS GOALS, IT IS HARD WORK, HOWEVER, BE ASSURED YOU CAN ACHIEVE YOUR FITNESS GOALS ALSO"
~ELISSA REILLY SLATER

Elissa began her journey in wellness from a very early age.  She began studying gymnastics when she was only 4 years old. By the time she was a teenager, Elissa had developed powerful musculature in her legs, thighs and upper body, and began to struggle to establish balance between her muscular physique and her desire for longer, more sculpted lines.  She was criticized for being "big boned", and began her personal odyssey toward a more complete and balanced understanding of physical fitness.   She took her health, weight, and wellness into her own hands.  She incorporated a "clean" diet as well as regular workouts into her daily routines.  She set goals and  made a new, determined effort to achieve her goal body style, weight and level of fitness.  When she was in high school, she began to ask her parents to allow her to do her own grocery shopping, selecting foods which would ensure she ate a low fat and high protein diet.  After juggling the up and down results of this effort, she learned that BALANCE is the key to success.   After trying a fat free diet, she learned she could not simply cut fat out of the diet and expect to lose and keep off weight. She learned that it does not suffice simply to cut sugar out of her diet.  She learned she could not expect to lose weight by cutting out meats or red meat alone.  She learned it is almost impossible to give up carbohydrates completely - especially since they are such a prominent energy source.

After years of trial and error and constant nutritional study, she designed a fitness and nutrition combo that she knew could be the foundation of consistent, healthy and balanced lifestyle.

Elissa does not recommend depriving the body of it's needs.  Rather, she believes that it is important to keep the majority of the diet clean and healthy; and to allow oneself to indulge cravings periodically as a reward for maintaining the basic disciplines of a clean dietary regimen.  Eventually, this type of eating becomes a lifestyle and those who persevere will see meaningful results in terms of weight loss while enjoying the special benefits of an overall healthier self.

Elissa began her business career as a licensed cosmetologist.  Although she enjoyed styling and the fashion industry, she realized that her passion is making others feel beautiful and self confident.  Elissa was thrilled to see that personality changes her clients experienced after makeovers were like "night and day".  After a little bit of TLC, they felt beautiful and confident.  Seeing these results made Elissa feel so blessed to be a part of that "positivity".  She revelled in the joy of helping others to share what she had been able to achieve in her own body makeover.  After 8 years of a successful styling career, she decided to make a change to advance her career, and returned to college college to pursue a degree in nursing.  While on this path, she was required to to participate in the curriculum's RNA (registered nurse assistant) program.  This led to her working for a wellness center in Charlotte.  Here, all of the elements of her biography combined. Her passion for fitness, good health habits and proper nutrition found the perfect expression, and she embarked on her inevitable destiny to follow her dreams and pursue something that is a constant in her life, teaching WELLNESS.

Elissa then enrolled in the prestigious Yoga Alliance School training, completing its rigorous 200 hour RYT certification.  She then pursued certification as a Fitness and Nutrition Specialist.  She is currently working toward her Bachelor's degree in Sports Management with a concentration in Wellness and Fitness.  Her plans are to host a flourishing nutrition resource website and provide her clients with the best care and knowledge in order for them to fulfill their health and fitness goals and dreams.

Elissa is a devoted mother and a wife.  She enjoys traveling frequently with her husband and family, and makes a home in the US and in Canada, where her husband has a business.  Elissa volunteers at the homeless shelters, the local Christian radio station, and various church programs in the Charlotte, North Carolina, area.  Although she loves the endorphins running provides, her number one fitness practice is yoga.  She has found the combination of running and yoga provide the results she desires.  Yoga lengthens and tones her body, and running provides cardio support, working her heart and speeding up her metabolism.  Below is her favorite story of how she began yoga.
